(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") Weavings from the region surrounding the Serab in Northwest Persia are known for their innovative, folkloric patterning within a traditionally recognizable aesthetic framework. This rug's hexagonal medallion with beautifully rendered anchor pendants features stylized blossoms and leaves in a macroscopic version of the classic 'Herati' motif used across the Persian rug weaving spectrum since time immemorial. An intriguing honeycomb decoration requires a second look to tease out the ethereal shapes similar to 'labrys' or 'double-axe' forms that have long had esoteric significance among ancient Mediterranean cultures. Corner spandrels are the same medallion in quarters, hinting that the design concept extends far beyond the frame. Prized camelhair yarn, often spun from the wool of the weaver's own camels, yields exceptionally soft earthen tones, and the rich, golden brown undyed camelhair used in constructing this winsome rug displays subtle abrash, visually texturing the surface like soft sand dunes. The border shows a chain of jewel-shaped motifs haloed by the luminous azure blue, perhaps even introduced by a Bakshaish weaver. Against the odds of time, this top-quality Serab area-size rug has retained heavy pile, suitable for more heavily trafficked areas.
