(One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Among its many splendid features, the piercing cerulean in this 225-year-old piece is extraordinarily saturated and glowing. Few examples of Ladik rugs can be found with blue in the mihrab, and, in this case, it acts as the backdrop for a most unusual and unique multi-layered symbol. This figure could be interpreted as a massive, 8-headed bird with large claw-like feet, evoking the power of an eagle. Tyrian purple and gold pinwheel shapes float above and below. Floating serrated leaves and blossoms fill the spandrels at the top, complementing the dancing of the pinwheels. The bottom pattern uses a design technique of horizontal dots running through the stems of the tulips, adding another layer of sparkle and delicacy. The weaver’s clear vision of her enigmatic design created a powerful complexity rich with emotion. The dyes, still immersive at this point, offer two different rich reds that provide a subtle pulse between them. Framed by a rosette meander main border supported by expertly executed left and right tendril-filled strips, this noble Ladik is a dynamic piece.
