(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) This very old and well-preserved Anatolian gem from the turn of the 19th century represents a littler known Melas style is recognized by its strong geometric overall patterning and small field in relation to its borders. On a rich vermilion ground, rectangular forms represent truncated cypress trees expressed in this village’s minimalist drawing. The elemental triangular motifs are apotropaic devices based on 'tumar’ -- protective amulets, often fashioned from silver, to ward off the proverbial “evil eye" of ill will and its harmful emanations. The soft golden major border features totally cubist interpretations of floral clusters that have been transmogrified into architectural forms. Naturally derived hues hinting at ancient splendor are revealed in lavish Tyrian purple, sea green, and royal blue. The reciprocating pixelated “mountain” design provides an energetic dazzle effect that focuses the viewer’s attention on the fascinating interior display.
