(Decorative)
Founded by Pompey the Great in 64 B.C. and called Megolopolis, Sivas is an ancient Turkish city that also became a weaving center during the Ottoman Empire, no doubt partially due to its historically large Armenian population. This large room size antique carpet is an admirable example from this tradition, presenting an allover delicate latticework that connects numerous medium and small flower heads in a lively and exquisitely colored array. Its naturally dyed rose rust field tone acts a warm foil for a wide palette of secondary tones that fill the symmetrically positioned motifs. In superb heavier pile condition throughout, this over 100-year-old carpet is finished by a beautifully detailed suite of seven borders.
