(Museum-Quality) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Konya rugs have an illustrious history that can be traced back to Marco Polo's writings from 1292, where he described them as the world's most beautiful rugs. Konya is one of Asia Minor's oldest and largest continuously inhabited cities (originally mentioned in the late Bronze Age by Hittite chroniclers, although the Ancient Greeks claimed it was founded by Perseus). Their rugs gained prominence when the Seljuk Sultans of Rum established their capital in the area. They are highly sought after by scholars and collectors for their bold tribal designs, stunning color combinations, and rarity. Reflecting its ancient, more rustic tradition than most Turkish styles, the exceptionally rare camel hair field of this captivating piece displays a subtle glow, replete with a masterful use of “abrash” textures, artfully alternating the varied hues of this hardy natural fiber. Beneath the mihrab, ‘Wheels of Life’ produce flowerheads while cool tulips grow downward. The upper spandrels present oak leaves and spiky flowers suspended from wire-thin vines, resembling a mobile of swaying symbols. Made from some of the richest wool to be found in the world from nearby rural areas, this handsome artifact would be a prize find for any serious museum.
