(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) There is truly nothing to compare with the Turkish dexterity in creating such exciting colors that defy aging. Originating in central Anatolia, Turkish Mudjurs are some of the most finely crafted town rugs, known for their prayer designs featuring either unadorned red fields or presenting 'Tree of Life' or lantern motifs. Providing focus within so much splendor, a rarely seen inner leaf-and-jade green, and the extraordinary vermilion nesting of the mihrab begin the viewer’s chromatic journey. Directly above the stepped prayer arch reside a pair of empyrean ewers upon a buoyant sapphire blue base. A colorful panel of lantern-shaped polygons lies overhead. This rug's high-energy primary border makes a bold statement with a series of sun-bursting blossoms as a counterpoint to the spacious interior. The dye work in this piece, which includes a most generous golden hue, is close to mind-boggling and exemplifies why early Turkish rugs are so revered. Working with difficult-to-obtain and laborious-to-process organic materials is part of it, but Turkish weavers seem to have some innate connection with the whole process that cannot be duplicated. This trophy’s unfathomably heavy pile condition at two and a quarter centuries of age alludes to its previous line of stewards' recognition of it as a great treasure worthy of preservation.
