2nd Quarter, 19th Century
(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) From the 17th through the 19th century, Ghordes was one of the most important rug-weaving centers in Anatolia, known for creating rugs of great innovation. Housing a singular elaborate tree, the pistachio green-hued mihrab first catches the eye as it seems to be supporting spandrels weighted down with hyper abstract disarticulated flowerheads clinging to strawberry-toned bricks with jagged platinum blue mortar. The primary 'sobokli' border is a series of ivory-based stripes adorned with tiny sprig and tulip motifs representing the seven paradise levels. This dazzling frame is flanked by two wide bookends, in dark walnut and gold, featuring stylized crocus patterns. An incredibly fine weave imparts a crisp clarity to this 19th-century carpet's winning blend of geometry and whimsical botanical detail. At nearly 200 years old, this lovingly preserved art carpet is a triumph of its type and an extreme rarity.
