What Makes Our Rugs Different

By Jan David Winitz, President & Founder

Clients often comment when shopping with us that our carpets are what they have been looking for, but haven’t been able to find. Our specialty is offering rarely-found antique Persian carpets and rugs possessing great artistic individuality and uncompromising craftsmanship. We offer the sublime rather than the mundane– these are pieces that express a refreshing uniqueness and an unquestionable joie de vivre.

We term the antique and vintage carpets we offer “art carpets,” because virtually all of the pieces in our collection date from the early 19th-century to the turn of the 20th-century, known as the “Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving.” During this period, the finest pieces were still individually commissioned as the inspired visual expressions of their weavers, not merely as decorative accessories.

The use of consummate materials is also paramount in our carpets. We accept into our exclusive collection only those pieces that use entirely natural dyes, which soften magically with the passage of time. You will see that our carpets often display stunningly unique color tones that you have never seen before in Persian carpets. We also insist that our carpets are made of luminous and resilient high-grade wool.

Claremont carpets are characteristically preserved in exceptional condition relative to their very significant age. Any necessary restoration has been performed with great skill by the members of our highly experienced restoration department.

A truly great antique carpet can warm one’s heart and intrigue one’s mind in the profound, deeply penetrating manner of music or poetry. To experience a carpet of this magnitude is to stand within a painting, surrounded by the richness of color and design. In short, the carpets we offer are truly works of art for the floor.
