Claremont Rug Company is pleased to present this exquisite new addition to our featured arrivals collection, a vibrant and artistic early Bakshaish camelhair runner. This amazing 19th century Bakshaish runner is extraordinarily rare three times over: it is significanly older  than most runners we carry; it uses a generous amount of prized and highly collectable camel hair; and it is an entirely original design. The incredible artistry includes subtly different tones of camelhair interacting to provide support for the masterful field pattern. Here the four-hexagon template is nothing less than stunning, featuring a vibrant “Bakshaish blue” lattice that recalls lightning bolt and sun ray imagery in an energetic, profoundly deconstructed and freeform way that is unlike later, much more uniform examples. Within each hexagon is an undersized diamond, filled with an orderly display of naive flower heads. The result is a delightful combination of sweetness and dramatic energy. Even the borders of this well-preserved runner are totally inventive–one inspired by an abstracted Caucasian chalice motif, another the stately traditional crenelated fence design and an unadorned outer camel hair frame, establishing a very earthy, quiet ambiance. This piece would be a spectacular addition to any collection, and a wonderful accent in a grand home.
