6. Our Oriental Rug Market Pyramid
Our Oriental Rug Market Pyramid
By Jan David Winitz
I have spent nearly four decades working with collectors and connoisseurs to help them build what have become extremely valuable private collections of rare antique rugs. Many of my clients also collect other forms of art and antiques, and are tremendously knowledgeable about antiquities, but might not be fully versed about antique Oriental rugs.
I consistently see that collectors, whether they are new to the rug milieu or already deeply involved in it, value an educational approach to understanding carpets which they often ultimately use as wall art as well as floor coverings.
To help clients understand the realm of these rugs and to better understand their value in the context of other valuable art and antiques, I developed a proprietary Oriental Rug Pyramid ™as a graphic and comprehensive tool to comprehend the market for handwoven Oriental rugs.
Rankings in the six-level rug Pyramid are based on artistry, craftsmanship, quality of materials, condition, age and provenance. The Pyramid encompasses the entire history of Oriental rug weaving with an emphasis on the Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving, ca. 1800 to ca. 1910, which is the period where art and investment level rugs are still available to connoisseurs and collectors.
In the Pyramid, as the tiers descend, the number of available pieces increases significantly, while the artistry and originality decreases. Rugs in Level 1 are held primarily by museums. Art-level pieces are found in Levels 2 through 4. Rugs in Levels 5 and 6 would be considered durable floor coverings of no intrinsic art or investment value.
Level 1 | Museum-Quality
Primarily 13th to 18th centuries — The Persian Safavid dynasty that ruled from 1501–1736 (“The Golden Age of Persian Weaving”) sponsored workshops that produced many of the finest carpets the world has ever seen. In 2013, a stunning 17th century Persian Kirman rug sold at Sotheby’s auction for $33.8 million.
Level 2 | High-Collectible
Primarily from early 19th century to circa 1875 — Artistic achievement and great originality flourished this period. These best-of-the-best caliber rugs exhibit fluid, subtly varied designs a highly exotic use of nuanced colors, and achieve superb aesthetic balance and harmony in the process. The finest rugs from “The Second Golden Age” were woven primarily in Persia and the Caucasus Mountains, but also in Turkey and the Central Asian plateau.
High-Collectible floral weaving styles such as Mohtasham Kashan and Laver Kirman offer specimens of unparalleled detail work and refinement, while the best of geometric rugs include Caucasian, Bakshaish, Camelhair and South Persian tribal rugs, notably Qashqai. While historical rugs from Level 1 are typically too fragile, many High-Collectible pieces are sufficiently durable for floor use.
Level 3 | Connoisseur-Caliber
Primarily from circa 1850 to late 19th century — This category encompasses outstanding rugs from all of the major Persian and tribal groups.
The period starting around 1875 is often termed “The Revival Period” of Persian carpet weaving, as a greater number of rugs were commissioned in styles such as Hadji Jallili Tabriz, Laver Kirman, Ferahan Sarouk, the extremely popular Serapis, and from a plethora of small village and tribal groups. Highly talented artisans used an excellent quality of materials and original, captivating designs and color combinations.
In today’s international market, a selection of excellent examples in quite good condition can only be found through a handful of specialty dealers worldwide and the finest offerings of major auction houses.
Level 4 | High-Decorative
Primarily 1875 to 1910 — With international demand increasing rapidly, the number of working looms, more rugs were woven for export, and designs became less complex and color palettes changed to satisfy Western decorative taste. Yet aesthetic appeal and originality still played a large role in the finest of these carpet workshops, where alluring designs combined with the color shifting technique known as “abrash” was still adroitly employed. Sultanabad, Mahal and Bijar are central styles in this group. Synonymous with sophistication and grace, and capable of “mixing” with a broad range of furniture and art styles, both these and Level 3 rugs are widely sought after today.
Level 5 | Decorative
Primarily 1920 to 1970— When the decorative rug market exploded, most of the resultant weavings fell into this category. The level of materials, craftsmanship and innovative artistry decreased notably, with often modern chemical dyes supplanting more subtle natural pigments.
Some Persian rugs woven prior to 1910 also fall into this category, as they are damaged, chemically washed, irregular in shape, of garish or fugitive dyes or are simply uninspired.
Level 6 | Reproductions
Typically 1970 to present — The newest contributions to the hand-woven market are adaptations of traditional Persian designs created in a broad range of qualities. These are by far the most widely available Oriental rugs today. Although the pieces may be labeled with famous Persian regional names, the majority are woven in India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Romania. Some reproductions are finely crafted using natural dyes, although the artistic spark and individuality that give earlier rugs enduring value are not present.
The best Oriental rugs are valuable art works and precious tangible assets, therefore should be appraised and insured at appropriate value levels.

8. The Four Traditions of Antique Rug Weaving: (2) VILLAGE
The Four Traditions of Antique Rug Weaving: (2) VILLAGE
By Jan David Winitz, President & Founder
Part Two of Four Parts
(Read Part One: Tribal; Part Three: Town; Part Four: City)
Over three millennia, Oriental rug-weaving became a central craft and art form of countless peoples living in tribal, village, town, and city settings. In Part 1, I examined the fascinating background of tribal rugs. Now, I will discuss the village rug-making tradition in Persia and the Caucasus.
Among the most inventive of village rugs were those woven in the mountains to the northeast of the city of Tabriz in Persian Azerbaijan. However, I must say that as precious little documentation specific to the activities of this region in the 1700s and 1800s can be found, exactly how this artistic milieu arose is shrouded in mystery. Yet, the rugs I have been privileged to collect and present to my clients for over four decades clearly speak for themselves. Their weavers demonstrated a singular confidence in spontaneous inspiration at the loom, coupled with exquisitely dyed tonalities akin to Impressionist paintings. A true folk-art movement arose in this wild and undocumented area!
During the 18th century, Turks from the west and Armenians from the north moved into the area for political reasons. Both came from long-established weaving traditions that were village-based, unlike the multitude of nomadic peoples who also frequented the area. We have not personally seen or found published Northwest Persian village rugs before the end of the 18th century. However, early in the 19th century, a humble, backcountry village of Heriz, at an elevation of 6,200 feet, wove exquisite, densely knotted silk rugs that to this day fetch significant winning bids at auction. Although scholars I have spoken with have shrugged their shoulders as to how this came to pass, it is clear that there was great weaving prowess already in place at that time.
From what can be pieced together, the silk rug weaving venture stopped as abruptly as it started. However, the production of larger geometric wool carpets, usually with dominant center medallions, known as Heriz, Ahar, or Gorevan and the famed Serapis with their spacious, graphic patterns, vibrantly continued well into the 20th century.
Bakshaish and a cluster of smaller villages began making enigmatic room-size carpets as early as 1800 or before, some with asymmetrically positioned center medallions and others with elaborate all-over patterns. These rugs were often either ethereal or earthy in coloration and captured an uncanny sense of movement not seen often in other styles.
Bakshaish rugs woven in the 19th century exemplified the native penchant for experimentation, the call to personal expression and spontaneity. These settled pastoral weavers borrowed from the tribal tradition an incredible roster of geometric motifs, along with the artistic technique of abrash (intentional color striation). Bakshaish and Heriz were the two major Persian villages that produced full-scale spectrums of geometric room size to oversize carpets. These dimensions were usually woven only in the towns and cities where a stylized floral or curvilinear aesthetic was followed.
In the 19th century, there were literally thousands of rug-weaving villages in the Caucasus range, the country of Persia, and the Azerbaijanian corridor that lay between. Often, they had been populated for many hundreds of years. Living in breathtaking natural settings, their inhabitants attuned their lives to a simple agrarian routine dictated by the rhythm of the seasons. Where the artistry of tribal rugs could be said to be at once powerful and introspective, many village rugs are observant of nature’s delicate changes and celebrative of its boundless beauty. This ethos is often expressed through the use of harmonious, shifting colors that connoisseurs greatly value.
19th-century village rugs were created for the use and enjoyment of the weaver’s family and as gifts for special occasions. Any surplus weavings were sold in the local market, where an eager clientele was composed of international visitors, agents of the ruling family, and non-weaving households. Individual artistic nuances and insights were enthusiastically appreciated.
Other than in the Heriz region, village weavings were typically created in the area size up to 5×7, runners, and keleges (gallery carpets two to three times longer than their width) formats. Village men, highly skilled in natural dyeing, created family recipes guarded as intellectual property for generations.
The names of these folk-art rugs indicated either their tribal association, or the village or province where they were created. For example, from the region of Northwest Persian Azerbaijan that birthed the Bakshaish and Serapi traditions, also came multi-medallioned Karajas, Serabs (often using undyed camel hair), elemental Kurdish and Shahsavan rugs and runners. Today we still see many weavings from small villages whose names have been lost over time. In Central and South Persia, a few village rug styles are generally known, such as Malayer, Tafresh, Veramin, Lillihan, and Niriz. The Kazak rugs are often known by their village names from the Caucasus Mountains, whereas the rest of the styles reflect their provincial names, such as Lesghi or Shirvan.
Late in the 19th century, many village weavers became part of a cottage industry initiated by merchants from Tabriz. At first, the weavers were supplied with wool to make carpets of their own invention. By the 1910s, control over the weaving process tightened, and the design pool narrowed to accommodate the perceived taste of the burgeoning international market. Today, although the best 19th century examples have become extremely difficult to find, a variety of village rugs remain available that are respectable representatives of this tradition, rife with spontaneity and sensitive color combinations that flourished over thousands of years.
Bakshaish: Woven in a remote mountain village in Northwest Persian Azerbaijan, the best antique Bakshaish rugs are true connoisseur’s delights, full of unique details, intentional asymmetry and idiosyncratic takes on traditional patterns. Bakshaish weavers were masters at combining age-old geometric motifs and highly stylized renditions of classical Persian patterns, often with an intriguing use of asymmetrical design and color.
Although many Bakshaish rugs use a small-scale all-over repeating pattern known as the Herati design, the most collectible pieces employ either large-scale geometricized allover designs or intentionally misshapen center medallions on sparsely ornamented fields. Bakshaish weavers are well known for their skills with natural dyes, with a stunning “Bakshaish Blue” tone being a particular specialty, and for their use of natural, undyed camelhair.
See which of these rare, enrapturing antique Bakshaish rugs are available here, in the gallery.
Heriz: Heriz rugs present a striking hybrid of styles, combining the scale and grandeur of a city carpet with the charm and rustic appeal of traditional tribal rugs. Heriz carpets are thought to be the result of merchants from Tabriz approaching groups in the surrounding area with an existing tradition of weaving to produce room-size carpets for export.
The hallmarks of a Heriz rug is the warm-toned color palette done entirely in natural dyes, a large central medallion, and oversized corner-pieces. Heriz rugs are typically found in room sizes and larger, and have geometrically inspired designs.
To browse a selection of exquisite antique Heriz carpets in the gallery, click here.
Serapis represent some of the best-known and widely recognized Persian carpet styles, as they were the carpet of choice in many early federal buildings. Serapi carpets showcase a style that draws inspiration from both Caucasian geometric patterning and grand scale court carpets, featuring a central medallion with open reserves and bold colors.
The Serapi palette is quite vibrant, showcasing the exceptional skill set of the local women when it comes to natural dyes. The bold red tones have their origins in the madder root, while the rich variety of blues come from the indigo plant. Serapi carpets are typically found in room size dimensions, though smaller and larger carpets can occasionally be found, much to the delight of rug connoisseurs.
To view a selection of antique Serapi rugs in the gallery, click here.
Malayer: Malayer refers to rugs woven in the weaving center of Malayer and the surrounding villages. Rugs produced here are beloved as some of the most decorative village weavings, with boteh, flower heads, scrolling vines, and stylized birds being popular designs.
Malayer weavers incorporated these patterns into both the all-over designs preferred by westerners and the traditional medallion style carpets.
Malayer rugs frequently employ bold blue tones as a ground color, accentuated with a rich variety of naturally dyed hues. Occasionally one can find a Malayer rug that uses natural undyed Camelhair as a ground tone, and these are among the pieces most coveted by collectors. The best-of-the best Malayer rugs come from the village of Mishin and are known as “Mishin Malayer”.
To see more of these extraordinary antique Malayer rugs in the gallery, click here.
Serab: The village of Serab was known for producing distinctive runners and corridor carpets. Very few small size rugs and rugs 9×12 and larger were woven there, thus, are extremely difficult to find in today’s market. The traditional Serab pattern language features heavily geometric designs with multiple diamond-shaped medallions on delicately rendered latticework fields.
Serab was the one area in Persia that primarily wove rugs using large amounts of undyed camelhair of varying shades. Serab pieces tend to be finely woven and use the Ghiordes (Turkish) knot. The finest 19th century Serab rugs and runners are in high demand by art connoisseurs as their angular designs and earth tone color palettes provide the perfect foundation to contemporary artworks displayed on the walls.
To browse a selection of exquisite antique Serab carpets in the gallery, click here.
Karaja: Karaja rugs represent a stylistic blend between village and tribal rug traditions. Karaja are recognized principally by their distinctive pattern, a latchhook diamond flanked by two architectural medallions along a central vertical axis.
Their patterning is always very geometric, and can be highly similar to the imagery of antique Heriz rugs, woven approximately 45 miles distant. Saturated red and indigo colors are typical. Runners and area size carpets predominate, with room size rugs woven only very rarely.

To browse a selection of exquisite antique Veramin carpets in the gallery, click here.
Veramin: Veramin are among the most seldom produced of carpets in the antique 19th-century town carpet category, and are highly prized for their consummate refinement and exquisite, luxurious weave. Though nomad-woven rugs were produced in the region for a longer period, Veramin became an important Village-tradition weaving center of extended family during the second half of the 19th century.
Veramin carpets are known for being durable and typically have an allover design, woven without a cartoon to a very high degree of intricacy. Antique Veramin rugs are best known for a unique rendition of the Poppy Rosette design and the rich color palette that was typically used.

9. Art-Level Antique Rugs & How To Recognize Them
by Jan David Winitz
President and Founder, Claremont Rug Company
A wide range of Oriental carpets can bring us pleasure and pride of ownership as they grace our homes. Yet, only very few are also strong long-term investments worthy of collecting. With little exception, these are true antiques dating from the early 19th century to the turn of the 20th century. I term these pieces “art-level rugs.”
During this period, many of the best rugs were inspired artistic expressions of pastoral nomads living in isolated encampments of Persia, the Caucasus and Turkey. Using elemental portable looms, they continually reinterpreted ancestral designs passed down from mothers to their daughters for many generations. Art-level rugs were also woven on the family looms of the cottage industry in the multitudinous villages of the Near East. In larger cities, patrons commissioned workshops to create their finest carpets, devoting as much as 15 years to a single project.
Throughout the Near East, brides and grooms wove rugs to express to each other the deep affection for life that they could not formulate in words.
Throughout the Near East, brides and grooms wove rugs to express to each other the deep affection for life that they could not formulate in words. In many cases, they would present them to one another on their wedding day. Parents wove rugs to pass on the rich symbolic heritage of their cultural group to their children. Spiritual teachers wove to communicate the deepest aspects of their teaching to their students.
The myriad activities involved…made carpet weaving one of the most labor-intensive of art forms.
Using techniques virtually unchanged since Biblical times, the finest weavers strove to complete every step as perfectly as possible. The myriad activities involved—raising the sheep, spinning and carding the wool, brewing the dyes from pure natural sources, hand-tying hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of knots—made carpet weaving one of the most labor-intensive of art forms.
But the weaving process that had existed in a virtually unaltered form since time immemorial was swiftly transformed as rugs began to be produced for export to Europe. By the 1920’s and ‘30’s, the pressure to satisfy the decorative requirements of the Western market prompted the creation of large workshops throughout the Near East. Timesaving measures were employed. The time-consuming natural dyes with their vast array of nuanced hues were replaced by easy-to-brew but harsh chemical dyes. This irrevocably compromised the level of craftsmanship, diluted the ancestral design pool and thwarted the artistic inspiration of the weavers.
In little more than a generation, rug-making became an industry whose highest motivation was to produce decoratively pleasing floor coverings. Weaving was transformed from art into craft. So how do I recognize an art-level Oriental rug? Regardless of the region in which it was woven, it is a one-in-the-world artistic expression with an enrapturing visual impact and consummate craftsmanship…
So how do I recognize an art-level Oriental rug? Regardless of the region in which it was woven, it is a unique artistic expression with an enrapturing visual impact and consummate craftsmanship. The use of the finest quality materials is paramount. An art-level carpet offers a deeply harmonious palette of colors, stemming from the expert use of pure natural dyes, which gradually soften with age. The finest dye masters were accomplished chemists who created colors of great purity and tremendous visual depth.
The presence of an array of seldom-encountered tones is a sign of exemplary artistry. For instance, a lush range of green from celadon to emerald was brewed from a lengthy process of over-dyeing indigo blue wool with a yellow dye, obtained from onionskins, turmeric or saffron. Creating stunning ruby reds from the kermes beetle or regal Tyrian purple from sea snails also required a highly skilled hand.
The use of first-grade wool is also of central importance. This can be seen in the magical luminosity it lends to the pile and how it greatly enhances the saturation of the dyes. The best wool is elastic and replete with natural lanolin, which one can feel to the touch. It is literally an alive material that is incredibly durable.
For a rug to be considered art-level, it must possess a level of beauty that is literally breathtaking, and must emanate a profound sense of balance and harmony.
Many art-level rugs are brilliant explorations into the traditional pattern language of their particular tribe or region. Others demonstrate great uniqueness and rarity in their design and color. In either case, the individual stamp of its makers is abundantly present. However, the most important attribute is also the most intangible. For a rug to be considered art-level, it must possess a level of beauty that is literally breathtaking, and must emanate a profound sense of balance and harmony.
An art-level rug is an impressionistic work, inspired by the glory of the sunrise, the splendor of a field of wildflowers, the strength and dignity of a mountain or the unfathomable number of stars visible on a cloudless night. It expresses the sublime rather than the mundane, perfectly capturing a timeless moment frozen in time.
A number of early Modernists of Western art were captivated by great rugs. The Cubists, notably Klee and Kandinsky, studied the abstract forms of tribal rugs in search of a new non-representational aesthetic. Matisse was enthralled by the carpets’ inventive use of color, as was Paul Gauguin who said, “Oh, you painters who ask for a technique of color—study carpets and there you will find all knowledge.” Now, a new generation of collectors is discovering what these pioneers of modern art recognized long ago, that the knowledge of combining color and design in art-level rugs is as masterful as is in any painting or sculpture.
Great rugs are unaffected by pop culture trends or by the status of the artists or purchasers.
One of the biggest challenges for the budding enthusiast of art-level rugs is also one of their deepest lures: in most cases, masterful weavers never signed their works. An antique carpet is anonymous art. Great rugs are unaffected by pop culture trends or by the status of the artists or purchasers. An antique rug must be judged on its own merits, on the quality of its craftsmanship and the depth of the impact it has on the seasoned viewer.

11. Copy of Antique Rugs in the City Tradition
Of the four main categories of antique Persian rugs, city rugs are the most refined. These graceful antique rugs were woven in the workshops of master rug designers. The exquisite curvilinear and botanical designs of these antique carpets were rendered with impeccable clarity, due to their fine weave, closely cut pile and the exceptional attention to detail. Each of the major city styles has unique design elements and its own individual “weave” (inner structure of the rug) including: Tabriz (notably from the Hadji Jallili (Haji Jalili) workshop), Laver Kirman (notably from Tausenchian, Khasati and Delmaghani workshops), Kashan (notably early carpets known as Mohtashams as well as the lamb’s wool “Manchester” style and from the Dabir workshops), and Meshed (or Mashhad) notably from the Omoghli and Saber workshops. In India, Persian weavers were imported to work in the workshops of the cities of Agra and Amritsar.
While each city in which these treasured carpets were produced possesses its own distinct pattern language and colors, one aspect of design is common to all antique city rugs: the use of symmetry. Unlike rugs produced in town, village and tribal settings, in creating a floral rug a master rug designer would first create a “cartoon”, a knot-by-knot plan that were to be followed exactly by the artistans who wove at the loom.
Tabriz rug weavers from the renowned Hadji Jallili’s (Haji Jalili) workshop “produced inspired versions predominantly of the revered medallion-and-corner-piece design, while other patterns such as multi-medallion and Garden of Paradise were also created. These carpets are recognizable for distinctive palette of brick, clay, taupe, soft greens and cream tones that eschewed the Persian use of soft to deep reds and blues. In the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, other Tabriz workshop were influenced by the Hadji Jallili color palette and patterns to create less ornate, more loosely knotted pieces known as “Rugs in the Style of Hadji Jallili.” Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, other Tabriz workshops created very finely crafted carpets of great beauty in the traditional palette of reds and blues or a panoply of hues. To view a selection of antique Tabriz rugs from the Hadji Jallili (Haji Jalili) workshop in the gallery, click here. To view a cross-section of all antique Tabriz rugs, click here.
The city of Kirman (also spelled Kerman) was a major producer of floral rugs in the 19th century, with Laver (Ravar) Kirman rugs particularly renowned. Laver Kirman designs were marked by exquisitely rendered, small-scale, intricate patterns and a color palette of gold and yellows contrasted by small areas of deep indigo hues as well as a range of soft pinks, rose reds, blues, and greens. You will also find one of the rarest and most prized dyes, cochineal, which yielded the rich Renaissance blue-reds found in these stunning antique rugs. Notably, this district produced rugs in all sizes up to palace sizes that took many years to weave. The “best-of-the-best” Laver Kirman rugs are especially sought out by collectors and interior designers alike. To see more of these extraordinary antique Laver Kirman rugs in the gallery, click here.
The city of Kashan
boasts an illustrious weaving history dating back to the 16th century, and is the birthplace of many archetypal antique carpet designs. Of all the floral rugs produced in the 19th century, those from the Mohtasham Kashan tradition are the most prized. In the 19th century and early 20th century, the designers and weavers of Kashan had the most inventive, profound aesthetic that, coupled with an extremely fine weave, produced rugs of great depth and beauty. These sublime pieces used the highest quality lamb’s wool, giving them a reflective quality, which makes their colors shimmer. Ivory and gold backgrounds were most often used to set off this style’s remarkable panoply of medallion or overall patterns. To view a diverse gallery of beautiful antique rugs from the city of Kashan, click here.
Isfahan rugs trace a direct lineage to the most illustrious and important weaving tradition of the 16th and 17th century Safavid era, widely seen as the original Golden Age of Persian weaving. Technical excellence that included the use of the arabesque pattern and elegant botanical designs are the hallmarks of this quintessential Court carpet style. Both area size and larger room size dimensions were woven, often commissioned by elite patrons. In carpets woven from the mid-19th century to circa 1920, the classical Isfahan design attributes of formal symmetrical drawing, delicate vinery and intricate central medallions predominate. To browse a selection of exquisite antique Isfahan carpets in the gallery, click here.
In India two weavers centers created carpets that were firmly in the Persian tradition, often made by imported Persian weavers. These are Amritsar and Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal. Weaving in Amritsar was heavily influenced by Persian weaving, dating back to the 16th century. Master craftsmen in Amritsar were experts in creating the vegetable dyes which give Amritsar antique rugs their unique ethereal palette of golds, gentle rusts, pinks, mid-tone blues, and a compelling unique lavender hue. The designs of these rugs are marked by a distinct whimsy and often feature small animal motifs within elegant spiraling vines. To browse a selection of exquisite antique Amritsar and Agra carpets in the gallery, click here.
19th century Meshed rugs continue a classical Court carpet tradition established during the 16th and 17th centuries. Boasting an effusive, floral design, Meshed carpets usually incorporate deep burgundy or claret grounds as their defining color. The formal, botanically inspired patterning that surrounds a central, symmetrical medallion is highly ornate. Signature cartouches are occasionally encountered. A stiff, heavy handle is characteristic of antique Meshed carpets. See these rare, enrapturing antique Meshed rugs are available here, in the gallery.
In the legacy of the East Persian Court tradition that influenced weaving throughout the Khorossan district, 19th century Dorasht carpets are known for their refined weaves and deeply creative botanical inspired patterns. Prior to the last quarter of the 19th century, their intricate overall herati and floral designs most often used distinctive rose and ruby red tones in their color palette. Later pieces sometimes offer rust and persimmon tones. While much of Dorasht production created supple, finely woven, allover patterns, the best pieces offer astonishing floral themed artistry. One of the least produced antique City carpet styles, Dorasht carpets are encountered only occasionally, most typically in area size dimensions. To view a selection of antique Dorasht rugs in the gallery, click here.
On par with the finest of the other Court weaving styles, 19th century Tehran carpets are very highly prized by connoisseurs for their detailed renderings of fanciful gardens and dazzling allover repeated patterns. Strikingly realistic, pictorial drawing is a hallmark of this style, with an abundance of animals, birds and effusive botanical forms rendered from a direct observation of nature. Exceedingly subtle, nuanced color palettes are often employed to support these designs, entirely eschewing harsh color combinations. Tehran carpets are among the most seldom produced of antique styles and are incredibly scarce. In 19th century pieces, area sizes predominate. 12. Kazak Landing Page
Discover the Folkloric Whimsy & Artistic Depth of Caucasian Kazak Rugs
With roots to the people who inhabited this majestic Caucasus Mountains since the dawn of history, the tribal weavers who occupied the region’s highest encampments and small alpine villages created a powerful rug style known as Kazak. As trade routes expanded and became more populated Kazak examples made their way to Europe, Asia, and eventually the Americas so that by the eighteen and nineteen hundreds these rugs had captured the admiration of collectors and museums internationally.
Kazak is in the Republic of Armenia, directly to the north west of Lake Sewan. “In weaving terms, Kazak is probably the most famous area in the Caucasus, for the best of the rugs produced there…combined stunning geometric designs with fabulous colors derived from high-quality dyes. It is possible to attribute some weavings from this area to specific villages, but when a piece cannot be precisely identified it is known simply as a Kazak or by reference to the design” (Middleton, Michael, Rugs & Carpets: Techniques, Traditions & Designs. Mitchell Beazley, London, 1996, p. 52). The aesthetic begot an astonishing panoply of patterns with names such as Fachralo, Lori Pamback, Karachov, and “ ‘Eagle’ and ‘Cloudband’ Kazaks”.
Unlike other antique rug styles, in many 19th century Kazak carpets, large archetypal motifs dominate the field, with majestic proportions that magnify the powerful effect of these iconic designs. Perhaps because they were woven in the highest reaches of the towering Caucasus Mountains, they express a particularly cosmological character, exploring the intimate interplay between heaven and earth. Their geometric designs are actually symbols, some found on metal work from the Paleolithic period, that combine in myriad ways to profound effect. Stars of Wisdom, Wheels of Life, Ram’s Horn, and Fence of Security and many other populate these rugs. Enhanced by naturally lustrous, long haired wool from the weavers’ own sheep that was slow-dyed for saturation, sustaining centuries of sunlight, top Kazak rugs display spectacular fields of color from scarlet to lapis, fern green to goldenrod.

The 160-year-old Ferahan tradition provides the essential foundation by which these great heights are reached: neither the incredible dexterity of its clear, profusely rendered natural forms nor the exquisite pastel and jewel-tone dyes can be found elsewhere, as dye masters capable of these long-lost techniques no longer exist.
19th century Malayer Camelhair Brings Subtle Enrichment to an Elegant Dining Room
Full room-size Malayer Camelhair carpets are quite seldom encountered. Surrounded by refined finishes and silver lighting sconces, the uncommon nuance within the subtly changing latticework becomes even more enlivening and fresh. The surprisingly sophisticated compositional effects present in the best 19th century village carpets create a natural compatibility with elegant traditional decors, as well as modern spaces.
Artful Kermanshah Illuminates Bright Breakfast Room with Exquisite Pastel Colors
Animated by the elegant, infinitely detailed patterning of a one-of-a-kind 19th century Kermanshah Court carpet, this comfortable breakfast room becomes a uniquely invigorating environment in which to greet each morning. Delicate, virtually never seen hues of periwinkle, celadon, garnet and apricot are seamlessly integrated within the exquisite tracery of a profoundly creative allover design of floating medallions, becoming even more cheerful and welcoming when illuminated by the bright sunlight. The antique art carpet is at once refined yet casual in this relaxed, genteel setting. Note how the piece’s soft but potent aesthetic immediately resonates with the Impressionist paintings, Chinoiseries accent pieces and artisanal hardwood furniture to create a harmonious, inviting space.
20ft-Long Persian Bakshaish Carpet Defines Dining Area in High Mountain Cabin
With its open floor plan, the living area, kitchen and dining area of this voluminous family compound in the Northern Rockies are effectively one massive space. Its owners strategically selected this 10’ x 20’ Persian village rug from the 19th century to play the central role of defining the dining room. The rug’s abstracted botanical design and amaranth red field are the perfect enhancement of this grand family space with its plethora of rough-hewn wood surfaces and exposed beams.
Ivory Ground Antique Sultanabad Carpet Brightens and Elevates an Eclectic Modern Dining Room
The intensely creative, stylized botanical patterning of a 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpet with a seldom-encountered ivory field unifies the colors, finishes and forms of the dining area of this inventive contemporary Southern California home. Abundant accents of rare teal green support the custom upholstery and lighting, but most subtly connect with the space’s natural contributors: the lush foliage of palm and orchid within the room, and the garden outside. The Sultanabad’s versatile large-scale allover pattern effortlessly accommodates this activity, adding its own elegant, keenly observed floral vinery to intensify the casually dramatic atmosphere.
19th Century Laver Kirman Rug Achieves Ethereal Elegance in a Stately Spanish Colonial Home
An early Persian Laver Kirman rug becomes the essential link in realizing the artful, nuanced vision for a casually elegant entertaining space of this Spanish colonial home. The homeowner, an accomplished collector of traditional art and antiques, immediately realized how the carpet’s complex design and understated colors would quietly anchor the diverse textures and hues of her ambitious design and used one-of-a-kind pieces as the foundation for a comprehensive aesthetic. The antique rug seamlessly mingles indoor and outdoor: as they pass between spaces, guests are continually greeted by new vantages, unified by the carpet’s magnetic presence.
Mid-19th Century Sultanabad Persian Carpet Provides a Stirring Counterpoint to a Contemporary Dining Room
When invigorated by shimmering sunlight, the stunning color palette and stylized allover floral designs of the best antique Oriental Sultanabad village carpets impart a special energy to a room that makes it a magnetic focus — both of the decor and of a family’s social life. The architectural structure of this mid-19th century Persian carpet’s stylized vinery recalls the minimalist, well-proportioned lines of the cherrywood chairs and the modern French doors leading to the patio.

59. Invigorating Color of 19th-Century Bakshaish Tree of Life Masterfully Enriches Extended Entertaining Spaces
Illuminated by the extraordinary color in which this carpet excels, a spectacular antique Bakshaish becomes the animating energy at the heart of this quietly elegant entertaining space. The cool, extremely light-toned ground—so uncommon and transformative in antique Bakshaish pieces—profoundly resonates with every color and texture in the well-appointed room, including fabrics, polished marble, and supple leather. There is an absolutely astounding variety of individual, creatively imagined blossoms within the prized Tree of Life format, contributing striking plum, crimson, garnet, celadon and stirring aquamarine accents that make the arboreal environment within the rug at least as inviting as the sunlit garden outside. As in so many interiors where separate seating areas are present, note how the Bakshaish carpet creates an immediately harmonious dialogue with the neighboring Ferahan carpet before the hearth, linking these nearby spaces in an entrancing, endlessly fascinating way.
60. World Class 19th-Century Ferahan Sarouk Rugs Contribute Individual Nuances To Curated Collection of Art and Antique Carpets
Building a home collection of high level rugs brings a variety of significant benefits: daily pleasure, connoisseurship and art investment, as well as diversification into precious tangible assets. Such is certainly the case with this longtime collector family, who have enthusiastically assembled a selection of unique area and room-size 19th-century Ferahan carpets. Each is spectacular in its own right, particularly for aficionados who understand the singular artistic departures each piece represents. Through skillfully planned placement beside outstanding works of painting, photography and sculpture, the cumulative effect of the art rugs is immersive, enrapturing and completely one-of-a-kind. Savvy connoisseurs have long realized the enormous potential offered by the interplay between architecture, décor and appropriately selected rugs to create a unified statement.

61. Antique Serapi Carpet Creates The Timeless, Harmonious Foundation For This Well Appointed Contemporary Décor
Amidst the white walls, light hardwoods and clean lines of this Chicago residence sits this elemental room size 19th century Serapi carpet transforming the space from contemporary to timeless. Its engaging medallion and overscale field ornaments, the waves of crimson striation, and the pleasing color palette is sure to invite conversation. Serapi rugs were crafted on the village level under an ethos of joyful spontaneity which is infectious in this décor’s joie de vivre. Antique Serapi carpets have long been appreciated as the perfect accompaniments to modern architecture and interiors. Here, International Style leather furniture and molded plywood Eames chairs help create a gallery-like environment that is incredibly alluring.

62. The Spirited Color and Harmonious Design Of A 1910 Heriz Carpet Creates A Profoundly Magnetic Centerpiece As Artistry, Craft And Architecture Combine
Viewed from the loft above this high-ceiling great room or at eye level, this outstanding early 20th century Heriz village carpet provides an aesthetic experience both exciting and unifying. Continually varied tones of indigo, sapphire blue, crimson, garnet and even emerald green stand out clearly within this majestic Heriz medallion, reminiscent of stain glass windows. Antique Heriz and Serapi carpets are beloved for their overscale designs that integrate seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary decors. Here, versatile, elongated dimensions allow the cozy seating area to be entirely defined by the carpet’s boundaries, allowing its viewers to enjoy the rug’s many expressive details. The surrounding eggshell white walls and clerestory windows provide a jewel box environment, intensifying this encounter.

63. Outstanding Art And Investment Value, A Suite of Early Caucasians Brings A Comfortable, Contemplative Atmosphere In Century-Old Cottage
Brought to life by streaming sunlight from the skillfully landscaped garden outside, a sensitively selected trio of early 19th century Caucasian rugs elevates this well-curated cottage into a refuge of quietly nourishing aesthetic experience. The pieces, chosen in consultation with an experienced team of carpet consultants, take advantage of a two-pronged strategy that maximizes both impactful artistry and allows savvy investors to diversify into a historically appreciating tangible asset class. With respectful common sense care, the light traffic that the couple gives their collection affords them intimate interaction while each decade the rarity of their pieces grows as supplies diminish. Of course, the benefits are experienced even more directly and enjoyably—by combining three distinctly different designs, the carpets bring out the similarities and differences of this weaving tradition, greatly enhancing the personal satisfaction of these collectors as they become ever more familiar with the subtleties of their collection.
64. Astonishing Creativity And Harmonious Artistry of Superb Area Size Caucasian Rugs Profoundly Enriches Casual Cottage Interior
The sunny, open floorplan of a rug-collecting couple’s cozy historic home allows them to transition from one distinctly different art rug to another for never ending enjoyment. This TV side of their Great Room provides an inviting, cheerful environment for the impressive pairing of two art-level 19th-century Caucasian carpets. On the left, a 170-year-old Pinwheel Kazak’s luminous palette seems like the playful alter ego to the equally early Soumak piece on the right, with its captivating winged medallions that glow with patina. Viewing top tier 19th-century tribal rugs on the floor from every direction, including—because of their large scale graphic designs–from across a room, is a particular gratification that this style bestows as sown here. An intimate bedroom space, a hallway or as the centerpiece of a sitting room, library or den, Caucasian Kazaks bring splendid color and stirring artistry.

72. History of the Potomac Collection of Antique Art Carpets
BACKGROUND
We owe a young woman with the dream of a start-up for our acquisition of the monumental Potomac Collection. This 130-rug treasury was passionately assembled over three generations and furnished various homes along the historic Potomac River and a summer residence in Charleston, SC.
Our young visionary owes her great-grandfather for finding a friend at Yale in George Hewitt Myers who would eventually create the Washington Textile Museum. On moving into his dorm room, the heir to the Bristol-Myers pharmaceutical fortune decided to purchase two Persian rugs and became smitten with them. Myers’ enthusiasm was apparently infectious, because the great-grandfather of the Potomac family, whose parents were in manufacturing, became an aficionado himself and eventually filled his D.C. home with extraordinary pieces. Over 50 years, these two men periodically enjoyed viewing the “rug finds” from each other’s travels and shared their research.
The seller’s grandfather, also attended Yale and ambitiously enjoyed the pursuit of collecting antique carpets. By graduation, he had determined a strategy for investing in nascent inventions that subsequently quadrupled the family holdings. Supported by a wife with an equal passion for rare rugs and a great acumen for interior design, over time their Arlington, VA home became covered with collectible Persian and tribal rugs.
His son, the father of our seller, concentrated on finance and along with his wife, a successful retailer, built a home in Great Falls and acquired a vacation residence in Charleston SC, both of which Claremont helped to furnish. He eventually inherited the D.C. and Virginia homes from his two predecessors, along with a Manhattan apartment — and the combined rug collection that had covered the floors and walls of virtually all the rooms in them.
It was their only child, a young woman still in her 30s, who contacted us. Remembering our rug presentations in the family’s homes, she offered 130 collectible pieces to us, after keeping 35 for herself. We were completely stunned, as we had never dreamt we would have the opportunity to represent the spectacular rugs we sold her parents again, much less the entire collection.
Over the two weeks that we took to get reacquainted with the entire collection, she shared many vivid memories of her parents’ and grandparents’ love of rugs and American antiques. When the young woman heard about Jan as a teenager entertaining his grandmother and her collector friends by guessing blindfolded the region of rugs by their handle, she remembered sessions with her grandparents learning the names of the Caucasian motifs and speculating how they worked together to create a symbolic language. She told us how relieved she felt to be able to pass on what she called “my lifelong friends” to people who understood them and will cherish them as much as she and her family had.

We specialize in pieces with the most stirring artistry and the greatest compatibility with today’s range of decors. Whether they live in Rutherford, Yauntville, Woodleaf or Larkmead, our clients find that searching for an art-level antique rug is a unique buying experience. Many of our clients become interested in antique rug collecting and connoisseurship once they begin living with just one antique carpet. In the client’s home pictured to the left (above on mobile), see how the soaring artistry of the very best 19th century Persian carpets is often the key focal point by which a distinguished decor excels, making possible captivating heights of refinement and enjoyment that may otherwise be out of reach. Such is the case with this exceptional allover Bakshaish carpet, which provides the defining feature of a grand entertaining space. The deeply personal, continual variation of its spacious allover pattern and extraordinary sapphire blue to aquamarine abrash striation of the oversize carpet animate the high-ceiling space in a way impossible to duplicate. Rustic hand-hewn beams, flagstone hearth and tasteful fabrics all are defined by their fascinating interactions with this art-level 19th century carpet, allowing each to achieve an even more satisfying resonance.
In the Calistoga client’s home pictured to the right (above on mobile), the casual, comfortable elegance of this inviting home is magnificently enhanced by a one-of-a-kind 19th century Bakshaish carpet. A glowing vinery-filled reserve of soft sand immediately resonates with the diffuse earth tones of the room, while a sensitively abrash-striated floating medallion of stunning aquamarine blue recalls the sunlit space just outside. Its rare oversize dimensions are uniquely appropriate to the high-ceilinged great room. The weaving’s folk art character and joyful, playful spontaneity cheerfully establish an atmosphere where family and guests can find stimulating, enjoyable company.

To the left (above on mobile), view a Highland Park client’s home and how encounters with entirely unique art objects are always deeply memorable, subconsciously elevating a viewer’s experience in ways that often continue to delight long after first exposure. Such is the effect of this extraordinary Persian Bakshaish rug that will fascinate every dinner guest, including the most seasoned antique carpet connoisseurs, with its totally unexpected, yet profoundly harmonious allover design. Virtuoso abrash allows carefully selected warm reds and an astonishing diversity of prized mid-tone blues to advance and recede with continually changing intensity. Archetypal latchhook and cloudband contours recall the very earliest East Asian symbolism, yet sit extremely well with delicately carved angels and European tapestry, providing this residence with another tableau where connoisseur level carpets seamlessly enrich their eclectic surroundings

Many of our clients become interested in antique rug collecting and connoisseurship once they begin living with just one antique carpet. A perfect example is the Lake Bluff client’s home, pictured to the right (above on mobile). The room is as enjoyable in the overhead view as it would be by firelight from the hearth, this sublime rug is an inspired choice for the dual viewing opportunities this room affords. Its large, splendiferous medallion from above accentuates the grand scale of the walls while the refinement of its finely etched drawing and age-softened colors provide immeasurable delight for up-close enjoyment. At 170-years- of-age, this well-proportioned, virtuoso Kermanshah Court carpet draws the viewer to delve deeply into its attentively rendered botanical imagery. With this entirely one-in-the-world piece on the floor, the comfortable ample seating and space for a game of cards creates a tempting oasis for relaxation.

Pictured to the left (above on mobile), is a client’s seasonal Florida residence whose modern elegance perfectly integrates with the 19th century Persian Bakshaish rug seen here. Waves of rhythmic abrash striation in the Bakshaish rug’s eye-catching azure blue border tastefully evoke the waters nearby.
Famous luxury neighborhoods such as Prospect Park and Flamingo Park are comprised of Spanish Mission, Mediterranean Revival, and Ranch-style homes identifiable for features like hardwood floors, “Florida Rooms”, or spaces with lots of natural light, used as a place to relax, and oversized swimming pools. In the photo above view a client’s West Palm Beach Mediterranean Revival home featuring an elaborately decorated bathroom with an antique rug from our collection. Pictured to the right (above on mobile), a delightful, diminutive circa 1875 Laver Kirman rug is the focal point of the bathroom, where the bold, inviting burgundy and indigo tones of the rug perfectly accentuate the warmth of the elaborately carved wooden vanity. The overall effect is refined and elegant, turning the bathroom into a tropical spa oasis. Often times when our clients begin living with just one antique carpet, they find how enlivening the experience of adding an antique art-level carpet can be to a home and develop a growing desire to collect.

Often times when our clients begin living with just one antique carpet, they find how enlivening the experience of adding an antique art-level carpet can be to a home and develop a growing desire to collect. Pictured to the left (above on mobile), see how the abundant artistic energy of this rare large Persian Bakshaish carpet perfectly resolves the challenge of the converted industrial loft. Its graphic presence provides a natural focal point in this high-ceilinged Manhattan living room, while providing a storehouse for endless contemplation and discovery. Its harmonious, time-softened hues and elemental, archetypal imagery will be continually refreshed by the changing natural light over the course of the day. The carpet’s simplicity brings out the inherent sculptural aspect of the exposed brick, old-growth wooden beams and wrought iron columns, all of which share the 19th-century folkloric rug’s honesty of purpose and materials.
From a stunning Park Avenue neo-Gothic-style penthouse to an awe-inspiring Upper West side home to any style your New York home may be, an antique Persian carpet breathes new life into any home. Over the nearly four decades Claremont Rug Company has been in business, we have found the experience of collecting and connoisseurship is one our clients find very fulfilling and unique. Pictured to the right (above on mobile), see how an oversized mid-19th century Persian Sultanabad carpet employs welcoming color and glowing patina to enliven this comfortably appointed room graced by sumptuous amounts of natural light and expansive views.

In our Nashville client’s home pictured to the left (above on mobile), this painterly mid-19th century Laver Kirman “Garden of Paradise” carpet provides the ideal serene base for this traditional living room of a Southern home. Whether our clients live in Belle Mead, Green Hills, Forest Hills, Oak Hills, Radnor Lake, 12th Ave. South, Belmont-Hillsboro, or The Gulch, they find that searching for an art-level antique rug is a unique buying experience. Many of our clients become interested in antique rug collecting and connoisseurship once they begin living with just one antique carpet.
Pictured to the right (above on mobile), see how our client’s gracious Nashville colonial interior is greatly enlivened by an antique circa 1910 Manchester Kashan rug. Using extraordinarily lustrous merino wool this antique Persian carpet exerts a powerful magnetism to anchor the entire space. It draws the viewer’s eye deep into the exceptionally intricate nuances of its grand botanical medallion composition. Soft cream fabrics, ivory moldings and warm hardwoods are made even more inviting by the counterpoint of the saturated color and shimmering, lanolin-rich wool of this antique Persian rug, a perfect consonant with the antique American furniture and Dutch Delftware vases that adorn the mantle. The richness of the carpet reflects the delicacy and grace of each piece, especially the original, hand-colored lithograph from John Gould’s famed Family of Hummingbirds, a seminal 1849 work from this great Audubon-era bird illustrator. Often times when our clients begin living with just one antique carpet, they find how enlivening the experience of adding an antique art-level carpet can be to a home and develop a growing desire to collect.

To the left (above on mobile), see how conversation and activity groupings are created with the use of a series of vintage Persian carpets of different styles. A small room size vintage Persian Kashan rug holds the seating area under the silkscreen by American photorealist Chuck Close echoing its colors and even its detail work in this client’s East Bay home. Antique Persian carpets pair marvelously with a variety of interior decor styles.
Whether your home is a mid-century modern home in Upper Rockridge or an elegant estate in Piedmont or a Panoramic Hill contemporary home with sweeping Bay views, antique 19th-century Persian and Oriental art-level carpets pair beautifully with any decor style. A perfect example is the client’s home, pictured to the right (above on mobile). The organic, rough hewn ceramic sculpture by Peter Voulkos is displayed in the entryway on top of its artistic opposite, a finely woven antique Persian Isfahan floral carpet. Together they set the stage for the engaging experience of interacting with this couple’s extensive and wide-ranging art collection.

The antique rug’s large room size dimensions and profusion of attentively rendered scrolling boughs easily and evocatively anchor the high-ceilinged space.

The substantial age and character of many of the homes in Houston, Texas, especially in the River Oaks, Memorial and Piney Point Village neighborhoods where many of our clients reside gives an air of time past. A perfect example of exquisite pairing of our rugs with a client’s interior is the Houston client’s home pictured to the right (above on mobile). The open, expansive plan of a gracious living room is completed by the inclusion of two exceptional antique Ferahan Sarouk carpets. The duo’s magnetic artistry unites the spacious entertaining area into a cohesive series of intensely inviting, human-scaled spaces. The carpets deftly create distinct conversational zones, thanks to exquisite botanical tracery and dynamic color interactions that are the natural result of inspired, virtuoso weavers in complete command of their medium.
Over the years, we have found that many of the beautiful, antique Persian rug styles Claremont deals in are ideal pairings with the decor styles of Houston homes. Pictured to the left (above on mobile) see how the incredibly intricacy and effortless balance of a 140-year-old Ferahan Sarouk carpet provides the ideal note of refinement upon which this elegant Texas library is based. Its warm, time-softened colors resonate to best effect in the subdued lamplight, where they beautifully complement the handcrafted wooden paneling and bookshelves. This Persian town carpet’s breadth of palette supports the comfortable yet sophisticated choices of fabric. We know creating inviting, gracious spaces is of the utmost importance to our Houston clientele and for this reason, we can provide expert consultative services like our In-Home Presentations to guarantee the most appropriate antique Oriental rug is placed perfectly in each client’s home.

We have found the region’s unique architecture pairs beautifully with antique Persian rugs, the two combing to create inviting, gracious homes. In the early part of the 20th Century, architects building homes in the Dallas area looked to traditional European styles for inspiration, such as French Country, Spanish Colonial, and Italian. These styles were reimagined with a Texas sensibility and scale, but kept the elegant details and refinement that makes them timeless choices. Highland Park’s Mediterranean inspired homes are an iconic example of this regional take on a classic style, as are the neoclassical abodes in Preston Hollow’s classical French-inspired mansions.
In these grand traditional homes, Dallas clients will often gravitate towards classical styles of antique rugs, using an art level Laver Kirman Persian carpet to create unity in a space, or defining an area with an elegant floral Sultanabad antique rug. In this section, see the assortment of clients’ homes where Antique Persian rugs adorn truly enchanting, architectural wonders in Dallas, Texas. Often times when our clients begin living with just one antique carpet, they find how enlivening the experience of adding an antique art-level carpet can be to a home and develop a growing desire to collect.

Over the years, Claremont Rug Company has had the honor of working with many clients in Silicon Valley to adorn their estates with the most lovely antique Persian & tribal rugs from our collection. Whether a client has a modern downtown Palo Alto condo or a stately family home in Crescent Park, our expansive collection of 19th to early 20th century antique art carpets pair impressively with a variety of decor styles. Many of our Silicon Valley clients begin by decorating their home with one or two antique rugs. But quickly they find that living with an antique rug not only enhances the beauty of a room but also enlivens the atmosphere of a space in a way that only a handmade piece of art with over a hundred years of heritage can.

Pictured to the left (above on mobile),a unique decor choice by this Silicon Valley connoisseur was using not one but two spectacular antique rugs in an elegant bathroom to create an intimate and private space. The 19th century Oriental Malayer rugs join the decor with their rare ivory grounds and sublime accents colors. Also contributing captivating wreaths, blossoms and other charming patterns, they become a tactile as well as visual delight in the space.
Pictured to the right (above on mobile), the rhythmic, folkloric artistry and captivating warmth of luminous undyed camelhair in this exceptional 19th century Persian Kurdish carpet greet these homeowners every morning as they contemplate their day. Instead of placing a larger rug on the breakfast table, these savvy antique Oriental carpet connoisseurs have placed this wide runner alongside, where it can be seen in all its unaffected splendor from anywhere in the room. The rare melon and ivory accents of this village Persian rug resonate with the kitchen’s wallpaper and cabinetry, while striated camelhair brings together the tones in several types of wood.

Pictured to the left (above on mobile), view how a client’s modern living room that perfectly illustrates how a very rare 175-year-old Persian Bakshaish carpet with a field of undyed camel’s hair adds warmth and texture to the economy to this modern setting incorporating mud walls, pre-Columbian pottery, and a non-figurative painting. In the over 100 years since the first grape was planted in the California Wine Country, many different architectural styles have influenced the development of Sonoma County. From modern to Tuscan-style to French-inspired chateaus, we have found that art-level antique rugs can greatly enliven any style home and are especially captivating when a collection is displayed throughout the entire interior of an estate.
Pictured to the right (above on mobile), see how a client’s home which exemplifies how a collection of three highly complementary late 19th-century Sultanabad carpets enhance the underlying “form follows function” theme in this newly built California home. Like the Frank Lloyd Wright-styled architecture and Craftsman hardwood furniture, the carpets’ elegant, casual allover patterns present the elements of the natural world reduced to their essentials. The best 19th century carpets often have this effect on an open floor plan, bringing together connected spaces, warm woods and fabrics and natural light into a cheerful, inviting grand space designed for living. Though the artistic heritage of each piece is well over a century old, the assemblage is fresh, contemporary and timeless.

101. Fine Antique Rugs and The Evolution of a Collection- Part 2
Fine Antique Rugs and The Evolution of a Collection- Part 2
by Jan David Winitz, President and Founder of Claremont Rug Company
Volume 7, Issue 4
In part one, I discussed two fundamental considerations for budding collectors of antique Oriental rugs to take into account: which pieces to buy and how much to invest.
Now, I will address the importance of developing a strategy for assembling a collection based on your personal taste and how to choose rugs that are most apt to grow in rarity and value.
A frequent question my clients ask is “how do I develop an educated eye?” I use my “Nine-Point Methodology” to help them determine a rug’s level of artistry and craftsmanship and its condition relative to its age. It also addresses a rug’s artistic aspects, such as the uniqueness of its color palette and pattern language, and the extent to which it is singularly unique.
I help clients comprehend the distinction between the small percentage of antique rugs that are “art-level” and the bulk of pieces which, although original and beautiful, are more decorative in nature. Regardless of the region in which it was woven, and art-level piece combines a series of traits that separate it from the norm.
Using both the “Nine-Point Methodology” and my Oriental Rug Pyramid™ as resources provides a pragmatic approach to assessing a carpet’s merits. The six-level Pyramid groups rugs into categories that begins with historical Museum-Quality rugs, which are usually held in private museums, at the apex. Rugs in Levels 2 (High Collectible) and 3 (Connoisseur Level) of the Pyramid are art-level rugs of the magnitude appropriate for collecting and investment, as well as exquisite for home display. Levels 4 through 6 are ideal for furnishing a home with beautiful, non-collectible rugs.
For a rug to be art-level, it must possess a breathtaking depth of beauty. A profound balance and harmony between a rug’s colors and designs, qualities central to Eastern artistic philosophy are essential. The finest of these rugs reflect both the tremendous diversity and underlying unity of the natural and cosmic worlds.
Less than two decades ago, historical Oriental carpets were still what the Wall Street Journal (June 19, 2010) described as a “little-noticed niche.” However, today they are “commanding sums more often reserved for masterpiece paintings than floor coverings.”
As Museum-Quality rugs are achieving record-breaking pieces, private connoisseurs are recognizing that the best 19th century rugs are the next segment of this market to be discovered. The finest carpets from “The Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving” (circa 1800-1910) offer a comparable level of artistic maturity, along with the great attraction that their condition allows them to still be used on the floor. As a result, they are becoming increasingly scarce, with collectors and investors voraciously acquiring them and removing them from the market.
I cannot overemphasize the importance of educating one’s eye about rugs in the process of building a collection. For as one increasingly comprehends the language of color and pattern, and the underlying harmonious structure of an art-level antique rug, collecting them brings ever-greater rewards.

104. Contemporary Residences are the Perfect Palette for Antique Persian Rugs
Like the evocative landscape painting, but on a more immersive scale, a rare ivory field 19th century Persian Sultanabad, carpet adds the element of art to this modernized British living room with its striking custom designed furniture.
While it may initially seem counterintuitive, we often receive requests from clients regarding how to add antique Oriental rugs into contemporary designed residences. They come to see what I first discovered 20 years ago when a client asked us to incorporate a collection of 19th century rugs into a newly built, expansive contemporary residence in Washington State. I observed that 21st century architecture is inclusive. Its open floor plans, voluminous spaces and use of exotic woods, stone and metallic materials can combine perfectly with the age-old naturalistic patterns and time-softened, vegetable dyed palettes of antique Oriental rugs.
A perfect example is the Los Angeles-area home of Jennifer Aniston, who has lately become an oft-quoted interior design aficionado who applied her modernist ethic by softening the sharp lines intrinsic to contemporary architecture.
This light-hued, extremely refined antique Persian Tehran carpet makes a major contribution to the symphony of surfaces in this innovative contemporary space. Its light base and delicate, pinpoint allover design widens the spectrum of tactile experience, adding important detail and texture to the polished metal, marble, mahogany and glass.
A recent article describes her residence as “Old World meets New World, a polyglot mix of hand-painted wallpaper and midcentury furniture, Oriental rugs and polished concrete, antique Japanese screens and Abstract Expressionist paintings.” The article includes photos of her contemporary designed study, which is counter-balanced by the earth tone palette and delicate floral lines of a 19th century Persian Tabriz rug.
With their painstaking detail work and array of earth tone hues, antique Persian Tabriz rugs woven in the workshop of the master carpet designer, Hadji Jallili, are a profound pairing with the exotic woods and stones of much contemporary architecture.
In reading this article, I had an immediate affinity with Ms. Aniston’s thought process. Many of our clients’ homes are similarly strikingly modern, with enormous rooms, soaring ceilings and fewer defined spaces than more classical homes. Importantly, what these homes lack is an anchor to ground them and what they need is more soft surfaces to enhance the tactile element. Antique Oriental rugs accomplish both.
When working with clients who have contemporary residences, we often suggest that they select rugs to effectively define space and to create intimate conversation areas in expansive rooms. We also use rugs to add color to the walls which in contemporary homes are often in metallic or neutral tones.
Offering an organic sensibility from their entirely natural materials and dyestuffs, an extended suite of 19th century Persian Laver Kirmans, beloved for their keenly observed, delicate botanical motifs, grace this all green Leeds Certified home. Decor: Sherry Williamson Design, Inc.
While I have now worked with clients on a few hundred contemporary homes, I have fond memories of two in particular. In one, a grand townhouse in Greenwich Village, our client wanted an appropriate environment for an important painting that he had just hung. The gentleman made a point of telling me that he derived as much satisfaction from the suite of carpets that created a hallway leading up to the painting as he did from the painting itself.
The other was a collaboration with clients with a magnificent contemporary residence on Cape Cod that houses a major art collection. They wanted a single rug to grace their living room. We worked closely together to create a Whole Home Rug Display of 28 High-Collectible and Connoisseur-Caliber antique rugs that helped build the full impact of the art.
One of the attributes of antique Persian and tribal rugs is their tremendous variety in size, in style, in colors and in hues. They have the ability to create fully developed environments, to establish ambient spaces and to be inclusive with the furniture and art work that share the space with them. They become an artistic and emotional bridge between the contemporary and the traditional, each enhancing the other.

106. The Oriental Rug Market Viewed as a Pyramid
Excerpted From
Jan David Winitz, eminent rug expert and president/founder of Claremont Rug Company, has developed the Oriental Rug Market Pyramid™, a guide to support those interested in purchasing Oriental rugs. Rankings in the six-level rug Pyramid are based on artistry, craftsmanship, quality of materials, condition, age and provenance.
As the tiers descend, the number of available pieces increases significantly, while the artistry and originality generally decreases. Rugs in Level 1 are held primarily by museums. Art-level pieces are found in Levels 2 through 4. Rugs in Levels 5 and 6 would be considered durable floor coverings of no intrinsic art or investment value.

This Mediterranean-inspired desert home deftly blends soothing earth tones, custom wood accents, and prized objets d’art, all harmoniously anchored by an envious collection of 19th and early 20th century Persian and Caucasian carpets. As the home owners have long realized, the perfect antique weaving can completely transform a room, elevating the experience of a space in a profound yet unobtrusive way that is unique to this art form.
Throughout the home the carpets bring their own singular artistic focus to interact harmoniously with the artwork and decor, as exemplified in the living room. Note how the 150-year-old Kermanshah is beautifully paired with two 19th century European paintings that along with the chair upholstery and pillow fabrics create an atmosphere of romance and timeless elegance.
The homeowner’s penchant for a curated environment is clearly present in their hanging of a rare 19th century Persian Bakshaish camelhair rug on the wall where its unadorned field could frame the unique bronze sculpture in front of it, accentuating both enticing works of art.
When used both on the floor and as wall art in the same room, antique oriental rugs can uniquely unify an environment. This is vividly demonstrated by the mid-19th century Persian Veramin carpet on the floor and a circa 1920s Persian Mahajiran Sarouk that fits perfectly into the wall niche of this home office. The handsome deep indigo fields lend a richness and quiet masculinity, enhanced by the custom wood built-ins and leather desk chair.
The sublime 19th century Bakshaish carpet graces the master bedroom’s inviting conversation area. The clearly defined, elemental composition of this collectible rug, with a shimmering sky blue medallion, provides a natural centerpiece.; its luminous camelhair softly harmonizes with the cheerful soft golds of the walls, as well as the generous warm woods in this personal space.
The elevator landing has been ingeniously transformed, becoming a spot for artistic contemplation thanks to the remarkable creativity of two top-level antique Persian carpets. The ethereal coloration of the area size Hadji Jallili Tabriz on the floor is redoubled in impact by the similarly virtuoso palette of the singular Ferahan displayed on the wall. Each shares exquisite tones of sapphire blue and warm terracotta and apricot, used in quite different, equally masterful expresses of their particular weaving tradition.
It is not unusual for antique rug connoisseurs to find every opportunity to display their woven treasures. The semi-circular landing area provides ample room to adorn both wall and floor. The two 19th century tribal rugs on the walls: Caucasian Gendje (left) and Caucasian Chi Chi (right): and the two on the floors: Caucasian Erivan (left) and Persian Veramin (right, in rear) heighten the wondrous exhibition.

Extraordinary artistry and nuanced coloration of this prolific collector’s top-tier antique carpets provide the perfect counterpoint to the dramatic floor-to-ceiling views of the modern cityscape’s glass and steel high-rise architecture. The spacious and earth-toned mid-19th century Sultanabad in the living room is completely at home with the neutral tones and clean lines of the contemporary furniture. The carpet’s subtly curvilinear motifs gracefully soften the confluence of straight lines.
Antique Caucasian rugs have long been appreciated by Modernist architects and designers for their highly complementary artistic approach. Both aesthetics are deeply engaged with a viewer’s direct impression of the essentials of color and form. As part of this client’s Caucasian rug collection on display, the archetypal imagery of a venerable Caucasian piece from the prized Bidjov Shirvan substyle strikingly flanks the dining room table. In a clever juxtaposition, a series of stuffed Caucasian grain bag cushions sit alongside a Le Corbusier-designed LC4 recliner, both examples of form in service of function.
This contemporary homeowner has discovered the perfect way to bring one more layer of artistry and individual expression into his modern kitchen: an eye-catching 19th century Caucasian Gendje runner. Collectors like this client find the versatile small sizes of antique Caucasian rugs add to daily enjoyment of secondary spaces, such as the kitchen where so much of a family’s time is spent.
Transitional hallway spaces become a focal point for art display, enlivened by sculpture, painting, photography and textiles. The iconic cruciform devices of the mid-19th century Seichur Kuba gracing the hallway wall and the alluring clarity of the rare Seichur Kuba on the floor invite the viewer to pause and contemplate at each turn. An early Caucasian Lesghi rug partially visible on the far right wall is another example of rugs as art.
The restful sitting room has been skillfully organized to include art and artifacts spanning centuries. Here a rare19th-century camelhair Bakshaish sits comfortably with this constellation of eclectic Near-Eastern art and furnishings. Adding texture on the wall, the High-Collectible Caucasian Khila Baku that hangs in the rear corner adds fascinating complexity, as does the distressed wooden surfaces of the antique panel doors, rustic stool and low sofa.
The quiet atmosphere of the spacious master bedroom is enhanced by the unique soft greens and pastels of this one-of-a-kind 150-year-old Sultanabad carpet. Its singular allover pattern appears to advance and recede in the light toned space, providing a compelling sense of movement that becomes the focal point of the room. Minimalist modern architecture is the perfect foil to intensify this deeply evocative decor, blending East and West influences into an immersive and continually rewarding artistic experience.

Traditionally noted for their elegant affinity with formal interiors (French Provincial, for example), the fluid lines and exquisite delicacy of 19th century Persian Laver Kirman carpets are here imparting an equally successful impact on this sumptuous, informal contemporary interior. Inspired expression of architecture and design, coupled with virtuoso antique weavings, find a perfect harmony in this one-of-a-kind San Francisco Bay LEED certified home.
Note how the flowing Persian City carpets surprisingly yet effortlessly coexist with the clean, geometric lines of warm wood paneling and post-modern design flourishes, creating a memorable and inviting living space. The smaller, detailed carpet design elements become a brilliantly used contrast to the openness of the vaulted ceilings, the industrial steel trusses, and the expanse of the wooden walls. Additionally, each carpet also provides a visual anchor, supporting the home’s nature-inspired color range with aged tonalities and softly radiating patina.
The antique rugs create a further organic ambiance, as they were woven using entirely natural materials and dyestuffs and present a great diversity of delicate, keenly observed botanical motifs. The result is a purity and honesty of purpose like the artist-owner’s own cohesive, environmentally sensitive vision for the home. The presence of the exceptional Laver Kirman rugs uniquely underscore the adventurous modern minimalist aesthetic of this LEED certified home.

111. Developing Lifelong Relationships With Clients
My business as the founder/president of a global art gallery devoted entirely to rugs woven during the “Golden Age of Persian Weaving” (ca. 1800 to ca. 1910), has allowed me to work with some of the world’s wealthiest people (more than 75 of my clients are Forbes List billionaires). And what have I observed?
By and large, because of their financial position and because of their exposure to objects and lifestyle, they expect a standard of service and “product” unknown to everyone else. And I have experienced, correspondingly, that by approaching my interactions with them as both an information exchange and an educational process that I am developing many lifelong clients.
While price/value is always a consideration in any transaction, I find that the price segment is secondary to the object of their desire. The rugs that I sell are both rare art and precious tangible assets, valued in the $20,000 to more than $500,000 per piece range. To have reached the pinnacle of success that my gallery, Claremont Rug Company, has achieved is the culmination and combination of inventory, expertise and a respect for and an understanding that my clients have the expectation of having access not only to only elite products, but the very finest of service. In turn, our clients have access to what has been to historically an undervalued and “under the radar” precious tangible asset.
I’ve found that ultimately the success in working with clients at this level of wealth is dependent upon building a trusting relationship, intimate product knowledge and recognition that the relationships are not really about selling something. Rather, we are exploring our clients’ psyches to uncover what they desire and helping them understand what they are acquiring. We are acting as intimate consultants to help and guide them to explore their passions. I have had clients who have worked with us for nearly the full 37 years of my Gallery’s existence. Some I work with them and their family members frequently over that three-and-a-half-decade period. With others, the contact may be only once a decade. But they are loyal and I have helped them, exclusively, to build important private art collections of rare rugs. We have active clients on five continents and annually sell more art-level Second Golden Age rugs than all the world’s leading auction houses combined.
Our approach is entirely educational and completely deferential. We recognize that our clients are extremely different than others, but in more ways than simply having money. They wish to have access to our knowledge in a palatable and pleasurable manner
Our business model from Day 1 has been predicated upon the notion that Persian and tribal rugs from the Second Golden Age of Weaving are objects of art on the same level with other fine arts and antiques and, as such, were to be considered precious tangible assets. We also established early on a level of client satisfaction and an approach that continues to value our clients’ most precious commodity: time. We understand the importance of the knowledge and reputation of their art dealer, their desire to have access to one-in-the-world inventory available and their desire to know and to understand what they are acquiring.
In a very real sense, we recognize that client service starts not after a purchase but at the initial interaction. This continues not only through the sales process but for years to come through our ongoing service and long-term rug exchange programs. With this as our operating premise, we have built a base of knowledgeable clients who value working with us. They are provided with access to exceptional pieces of art, through our program of private sales that satisfy them on an emotional level while assuring them that they are acquiring precious tangible assets which have increased in rarity for decades.
As a privately-owned Gallery working with extremely wealthy clients for more than three decades, we have built a knowledge base on a very specific business model that is applicable across a broad spectrum of industries. While our niche is antique Oriental rugs, our success is based on fundamental principles that are all too often misapplied or disregarded by those who work with the wealthy.
112. Striking 19th Century Caucasian Lesghi Rug Adds Dynamic Presence To Modern Dining Room
See our antique Caucasian rugs now available.
The incredibly potent natural dyes of a superb antique Lesghi tribal rug provide the perfect counterpoint to the minimalist design and modern cityscape that surround this San Francisco collector’s elegant dining area. The urbane backdrop of white surfaces and clean lines acts as a powerful foil to the 19th-century Caucasian rug’s intensely saturated indigo, fiery carnelian and terracotta, as well as pinpoint highlights of saffron and sapphire blue, magically intensifying the impact of both aesthetic approaches. Though the carpet remains an understated and even playful element, its weight in this composition is profound: note how the resonant artistry of this one area-size piece easily balances the much larger open plan space, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and even the towering Financial District edifices beyond. The presentation highlights the unique art carpet’s artistry as if in a museum display, yet the arrangement never feels sterile or separated, instead deeply, seamlessly integrated into the life of the space and its residents.

114. Surrounded By Sunlight And Natural Materials, A Virtuoso Antique Laver Kirman Transforms a Cozy Modern Sitting Area
The immersive artistry of a spectacular 160-year-old Laver Kirman carpet profoundly enhances the carefully orchestrated elements of this contemplative sitting area in a contemporary design home. The harmonious craft-dyed hues of parchment, celadon and claret intensify under natural light from circular skylight and window, continually offering new tones as the day progresses. When the sun sets, flickering firelight from the custom designed woodstove reveals entirely different nuances within the carpet’s intricate botanical design, to be savored at length over the course of an evening from the casual comfort of an overstuffed leather chair. Blonde wood paneling and beige ceramic tiles are given new resonance, taking on a heightened character alongside the exquisite time-softened patina of the masterful Court weaving, the result of their shared use of natural materials. Its unaffected expression of balance and harmony ensures the rug is immediately compatible within the adventurous modern minimalist aesthetic of this LEED certified home, just as it would be in a more traditional setting.
